A Portrait Session with Quiet Strength
When Mike stepped in front of my lens, he brought something that can’t be styled or posed — something unspoken but deeply felt: presence. It’s easy to underestimate what it takes to show up for a portrait session. It’s not just standing in front of a camera. It’s allowing yourself to be seen — and that takes courage, especially when it’s unfamiliar territory. Mike had never done anything like this before, but he stepped in with quiet bravery and gave me his trust.

We worked slowly, gently. There was no pressure to perform or “smile for the camera.” Just space to settle in, to breathe, and to find stillness. As the session unfolded, Mike began to relax — not into a version of himself he thought I wanted to see, but into himself. Fully, comfortably, without pretense. His mum later told me that Mike said the portraits made him look 'normal'. She was choked up — and so was I. Because what I saw the whole time was someone grounded, thoughtful, warm, and real. Not defined by anything other than his own presence.

Portraits are about giving someone a reflection they can recognise and feel proud of. A reminder that they are enough, just as they are.
Mike, thank you for trusting me. And thank you, Dawn, for the care and love you so clearly pour into your family. I hope these portraits are more than pictures. I hope they’re anchors — for Mike and for you — that say: “This is who I am. And I am good.”
