Preparation.

You’ve seen those family photographs that make you pause — everyone looks relaxed, connected, and genuinely happy. There’s an ease to them, a sense of real family life captured at its best. That doesn’t happen by accident. It comes from a thoughtful mix of styling, attitude, and connection. The good news? With a little preparation, your own family photographs can feel just as effortless.

Work with your photographer on styling.

Clothing choices set the tone of your photographs. The right combinations elevate your images from 'nice' to 'timeless'.When you book with me, I’ll help guide you through outfit choices — whether that’s suggesting colour palettes, sharing inspiration, or dipping into my client wardrobe. We’ll create a look that works beautifully on camera without feeling overdone. The best sessions are always a collaboration. I know what photographs well, and you know your family’s style and comfort levels. Together, we’ll find the balance so that everyone looks and feels wonderful.

Arrive with a relaxed mindset.

Children will be children. That’s exactly what makes your photographs shine. The most natural images happen when parents let go of the need to control every detail and simply enjoy the time together. Smiles, giggles, funny little quirks — all of those things are part of your story.

Instead of correcting or worrying, lean into it. Imagine that whatever your child is doing in the moment is part of the magic. That shift in perspective makes all the difference, both for the way your photographs look and the way you feel during the session.

A gentle note for families with older children: resist the urge to coach their smile. A comment about 'smiling properly' only makes them self-conscious. I’ll guide them naturally, and once they feel comfortable, their real personality always comes through. Sometimes the best thing you can do is step back a little and let me work with them one-to-one.

Show affection.

The most moving family images aren’t about posed perfection — they’re about closeness. Hold your children, ruffle their hair, wrap them in a cuddle, or kiss your partner’s cheek while the kids play nearby. These simple gestures create images full of warmth and connection. If in doubt? Just move closer. Snuggle. Touch. Those are the moments you’ll want to remember.

Bring your own family’s humour.

No one knows your children’s sense of humour better than you. Think ahead about the little jokes, stories, or playful prompts that always make them laugh. I’ll bring my own tricks too, but weaving in your family’s unique humour makes the session more natural and fun — and it shows in the photographs.

Be careful with bribes.

It’s tempting to promise a treat after every photo, but it often backfires. If children are waiting for ice cream, they’ll be distracted and want to rush through the session. Instead, let the time together be the reward — dedicated play, cuddles, and attention from you. That’s what really lights them up (and makes for the most genuine photographs).

Choose a photographer who welcomes real life.

Children don’t always sit still. They wiggle, they laugh, they pull faces — and that’s exactly what makes family photographs so special. When you work with a photographer who understands this (that would be me), you can relax, knowing that every little moment is being turned into something beautiful.
